Web Site Updates

2024-04-25

Removed the javascript image popups from the unconfirmed serial numbers section. All images are now shown inline automatically, with no need for popup windows. Corrected MySQLi errors leading to page navigation issues in the results for both rosters. All results are now visible.

With the completion of those updates, the website is now fully back up and running. I have some improvement ideas, and there are probably a few bugs still lurking, but this completes the initial database rebuild phase.

Removed the javascript image popups from the confirmed serial numbers section. All images are now shown inline automatically, with no need for popup windows.

This site was originally created in 1998. At that time bandwidth and space were both very expensive, and so the images were small and you had to click on a link to show them one at a time. That was the right answer for that era of dial up modems and slow bandwidth, but not for today. Those same small images will now work perfectly as reference images in the listings.

Started looking into what it would take to get the website up and running again. It was over 16 years since any real updates had been done, though it had endured multiple server migrations. I did the website version of a locomotive's 1472 inspection. Can it be fixed? What will it take to get it running again? I discovered that the site was a bespoke work of art, with coding and design that has held up very well in the 1/4 century that the site has existed. That's an incredible longevity for websites, and a testament to Ed Vasser's design and coding skills.

Phase 1 was updating all MySQL database code to MySQLi code, restoring database functionality, and allowing the site to work once again. Every single page needed multipe revisions, not due to any design errors, but needed due to differences in MySQL vs MySQLi coding.

Most operations are now working properly, still testing and resolving minor glitches. It will likely take some time to find all minor issues.

Carl Wassink of Corry Rails contacted me and basically said "This is an important resource! Please consider either fixing it, or giving it to somebody who will!" Thus began version 2.0 of this website. I'd had plans and ideas for years, but it never became a priority.

2008-2024

ClimaxLocomotives.com website is kept running, but no major changes or upgrades were made. At some poing in 2023(?) the MySQL on my server was updated to MySQLi, which broke all of the SQL related functions, so the searchs no longer worked. The framework remained, but functionality was broken.

2007-11-18

Bob Harbison takes over the website, and migrates it to a new server. No major changes were made.

The site has been revised and some new content added. Some pages have been renamed and/or moved to new locations on the server. If you have linked to a particular page on this site, you will have to update your links accordingly. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but you can easily locate the page(s) by using the Site Map or from the Home page.

New features:

Photographs contained on the Climax Locomotive History, Surviving Climax Locomotives and Climax Locomotive roster pages will now open in a small popup window, if your browser supports the use of JavaScript. However, all photographs are accessible regardless of whether or not you have JavaScript enabled on your browser. Some browsers may require that you allow access to these popup windows. It’s perfectly safe to do so on this site.

Full roster data is now displayed for all search functions on the roster pages including functions to list locomotives by Class and track gauge. Formerly, the locomotive Class and track gauge listings consisted of a single page with only the Shop Number or Tracking Number listed.

Server Changes:

All pages contained on both the Climax Locomotives and Saw Mills sites now have PHP extensions. If you have linked to a particular page on the site and cannot locate it - refer to the Site Map.
