Typical Class A Climax
C. T. Stoner Collection

A typical 15 ton Class A Climax locomotive with a horizontal tee style boiler. This is locomotive No. 1 of the Davis Brothers Salt & Lumber Company, photographed in 1906 near Dighton in Osceola County, Michigan. The locomotive appears to be leased from M. Mitshkun Co. Railway Equipment, Detroit, Michigan.

Note that with the adoption of the horizontal style boiler; the boiler end is now considered the front but that the engineers controls are still in the same position as on the vertical boiler design, placing the engineer of the left side of the locomotive. This configuration never changed throughout production of the Class A style locomotives.
